Lack of Meaning and Purpose

You Mean This is it?

The story is a familiar one. You have a career, home, spouse and children, lots of friends, and a close family. You take vacations and enjoy your leisure time.

But, something is missing in your life. Now that you have it all, you realize that you aren’t as happy as you thought. Something is missing. Maybe you don’t have it all?

But All The Boxes Are Checked

A nice car? Check. A beautiful home? Yup. A wonderful family? Naturally. A successful career? You bet. But you can’t quite fill that empty feeling that gnaws at you. Nothing fills that hole that you feel in your heart and soul. What is it? A lack of purpose and meaning.

A Will To Meaning

Every person is compelled to find meaning in their life. This “will to meaning” is essential to finding happiness and joy. We are driven to devote ourselves to something of value and leave a legacy. Horace Mann, a leading educator, famously said, “be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.”

Existential Crisis

For some people this feeling doesn’t develop until their kids grow up and move out of the house. For others, it takes until retirement. For many people, it’s the so-called “mid-life crisis.” Maybe it happens after a major medical scare, the loss of a loved one, a significant life transition or just moving to another place. Regardless, something triggers this existential crisis and we are left feeling apathetic and empty.
